Wooden Door

Traditional doors of Kathmandu are an iconic architectural feature of the Newari houses in the city. These doors are intricately carved from haldu wood and feature intricate geometric patterns and motifs. The carvings are typically done by skilled artisans and are a reflection of the rich cultural heritage of the Newari people. The use of haldu wood in the construction of these doors not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also provides durability and strength.

One of the most striking features of these traditional doors is the intricate carvings that adorn them. These carvings are often inspired by nature and feature images of birds, animals, and flowers. The geometric patterns and motifs used in these carvings are also believed to have symbolic meanings, such as good luck and prosperity. In Hindu houses, you will typically find carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses, such as Ganesh and Kumar. In contrast, Buddhist houses will often feature the Ashtamangal, the eight symbols of good fortune. These symbols are typically depicted in the carvings of traditional doors of Buddhist houses.

These traditional doors of Kathmandu make for a perfect wall decoration or photo frame. They can add a touch of elegance and cultural richness to any room. They are a great way to bring a piece of Kathmandu's rich heritage into your home and serve as a reminder of the city's rich cultural history. These doors are a great way to add a unique touch to your home decor and showcase your love for Kathmandu and its culture. The differences in the carvings and symbols used in Hindu and Buddhist houses serve as a visual representation of the diverse cultural and religious traditions found in Kathmandu.

Centuries-Old Lost-Wax Metal Casting

Each sculpture at Handmade Handicraft is crafted using the ancient cire-perdue (lost-wax) technique, a craft perfected over a millennium by the Newar artisans of Patan. The process begins with sculpting beeswax and Himalayan tree resin by hand. A multi-layered clay mold is formed around the wax, which is melted away in the furnace, creating a void that is filled with molten red copper or bronze.

24K Mercury Gilding

Applied with pure gold leaf and fused using fire gilding for an ethereal sheen that endures for generations.

Cold-Gold Face Painting

The sacred facial features and serene gaze of deities are carefully rendered with powdered cold gold and natural pigments.

Hand-Chiseled Detailing

Intricate robes, mandalas, and jewels are carved by hand with miniature steel chisels and devotion.
